Marian iconography has played a central role in the history of Western art. Every era, style and artistic movement has given its own interpretation of the figure of the Virgin Mary, symbol of purity, motherhood and intercession.

1. Madonna and Child

This depiction highlights Mary's humanity and her motherly tenderness. It developed from early Christian times and became dominant in the Renaissance.

📌 Example:
Raphael, Conestabile Madonna (c. 1504) — Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg

2. Madonna of Mercy

Mary shelters the faithful beneath her wide cloak. An emblematic iconography of collective devotion in the Middle Ages.

📌 Example:
Piero della Francesca, Madonna della Misericordia (c. 1460) — Pinacoteca di Sansepolcro

3. Nursing Madonna (Virgo Lactans)

Mary is shown in the intimate, human act of breastfeeding, a symbol of the incarnation of Christ and of divine motherhood.

📌 Example:
Giuliano Bugiardini, Madonna Nursing the Child (16th century) — Uffizi, Florence

4. Madonna of Humility

Shown seated on the ground, Mary embodies the virtue of humility. Widespread from the 14th century, this type was much loved in Tuscan and Flemish painting.

📌 Example:
Masolino da Panicale, Madonna of Humility (1435) — Alte Pinakothek, Munich

5. Enthroned Madonna (Maestà)

Mary, seated on a throne with the Christ Child, is depicted as Queen of Heaven, sovereign and majestic, surrounded by angels and saints.

📌 Example:
Duccio di Buoninsegna, Maestà (1308-1311) — Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Siena

6. Our Lady of Sorrows (Addolorata)

Mary, symbol of human suffering, appears pierced by swords or in tears, representing her anguish during the Passion of Christ.

📌 Example:
Montepulciano, Our Lady of Sorrows pierced by a sword

7. Madonna of the Rosary

Linked to Dominican devotion and to the victory of Lepanto, Mary is shown handing the Rosary to the faithful.

📌 Example:
Caravaggio, Madonna of the Rosary (1607) — Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

8. Immaculate Conception

Mary is shown standing on a crescent moon, surrounded by cherubs, a symbol of her purity. Extremely widespread in Spanish Baroque art.
